Smoking will cause your vocal chords to become thicker and drier, which over time results in a raspier sounding voice. It’s not exactly healthy but many singers, such as Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan resorted to smoking heavily to create a more alluring singing voice. Many death metal band singers also benefit from the deeper, raspier tone that smoking gives them – and these changes are often permanent. If you are past puberty and are not exactly happy with the sound of your voice, smoking may be a vice you can take up. You may however develop an addiction to it – for many, it can be highly addicting. You have to ask yourself if having a deeper voice is worth putting your health at risk. A possibly healthier alternative to smoking cigarettes may be smoking weed. Smoke weed every day, and soon enough you’ll be sounding like Snoop Dogg.. or Lion?
All in all, I do not recommend taking this path if you want a deeper voice. By the time you get a deeper voice through smoking, you could be 2-3 years away from your death bed because of lung or throat cancer. Again, ask yourself if it’s worth it? The voice in your head will tell you it’s not.
